What Is a Naturopathic Doctor?
Many people have heard the term “naturopathic doctor,” but are not always sure what it means or how it differs from conventional medical care.
A Naturopathic Doctor (N.D.) focuses on identifying the underlying causes of health problems, rather than simply managing symptoms. The goal is to understand why the body is out of balance and guide it back toward proper function.
Instead of focusing only on treating symptoms, naturopathic medicine asks deeper questions such as:
- What systems in the body are under stress?
- What hormonal or metabolic imbalances are present?
- What patterns are contributing to the symptoms?
This approach often reveals connections between lifestyle, hormones, metabolism, digestion, stress, and nutrition that may not always be addressed in traditional symptom-based care.
It’s important to know there are 2 types —
Traditional Naturopathic Doctor (known as TND or ND)
is trained in natural health philosophies and therapies, often through private naturopathic schools or distance-learning programs. Training typically focuses on nutrition, herbal medicine, lifestyle, homeopathy, and other natural wellness approaches. Traditional naturopaths are generally not licensed as physicians, and their scope of practice varies according to the laws of the state or country in which they practice.
Randi Shannon is a Traditional Naturopathic Doctor by choice.
She made the conscious decision to focus her education and career on natural health rather than spend additional years training in pharmaceutical prescribing and minor surgical procedures. Her passion has always been to help the body using nutrition, supplementation, and natural wellness approaches.
Using Face, Tongue, and Fingernail Analysis, along with a client’s medical history and any existing medical diagnoses, Dr. Shannon looks for visible patterns that may indicate areas of stress or imbalance within the body’s organs and systems. She does not diagnose diseases or medical conditions. Instead, she evaluates what the body may be revealing through these observational methods and works with clients who are seeking natural ways to support their overall health.
Choosing the traditional naturopathic path also allows Dr. Shannon to focus exclusively on natural health education and wellness without prescribing medications or performing medical procedures. She believes this enables her to provide clients with guidance that is centered on natural approaches while encouraging them to work alongside their medical providers when appropriate.
Licensed Naturopathic Doctor (known as ND)
A Traditional Naturopathic Doctor (TND or traditional ND) is trained in natural health philosophies and therapies, often through private naturopathic schools or distance-learning programs. Training commonly focuses on nutrition, herbs, lifestyle, homeopathy, and other natural wellness approaches. Traditional naturopaths are generally not licensed as physicians and their scope of practice depends on the laws where they practice. Randi Shannon is a Traditional Naturopathic Doctor. She made a conscious decision to not spend a year in pharmaceuticals (prescribe) and not spend a year in minor surgeries. She uses your face/fingernails/tongue to see which areas of the body show signs of distress as well as your existing medical diagnosis. She does not diagnose disease or ailments-that is not the same as seeing damage or issues in specific organs or systems of the body. She also wants to maintain the ability to speak to you the client freely. Under a license you are bound to follow the medical community or risk the loss to speak freely to the client, lose the license and be banned from the field.
Licensed Naturopathic Doctor (ND)
A Licensed Naturopathic Doctor (ND) graduates from an accredited four-year naturopathic medical program and is licensed in jurisdictions that regulate the profession. Depending on the state or province, licensed NDs may have authority to perform physical exams, order laboratory tests, diagnose medical conditions, prescribe certain medications, and perform limited procedures. Their scope of practice varies by location.
A Root-Cause Approach to Health
At TheBodyCAN, Dr. Randi Shannon, N.D. focuses on identifying patterns within the body that can lead to a wide range of health concerns.
Health challenges rarely exist in isolation. Many symptoms are connected to deeper imbalances involving:
- Hormones
- Metabolism
- Blood sugar regulation
- Stress hormones such as cortisol
- Digestive function
- Nutrient balance
- Sleep cycles and circadian rhythm
When these systems fall out of balance, the body often sends signals such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, hormonal shifts, digestive discomfort, brain fog, weight changes, or mood fluctuations.
Naturopathic medicine looks at the entire system to determine where those imbalances may originate.
Natural Diagnostic Methods
One aspect that distinguishes Dr. Randi Shannon’s approach is her use of traditional diagnostic observation methods that have been used in medicine for thousands of years.
These methods help identify patterns in the body that may provide insight into underlying imbalances.
Face Analysis
Subtle changes in facial color, tone, and markings can sometimes reflect stress on specific systems in the body.
Tongue Analysis
The tongue has long been used in traditional medicine to evaluate digestion, circulation, inflammation, and metabolic balance.
Fingernail Analysis
Fingernail shape, ridges, color, and texture may provide clues about nutrient status and internal stress within the body.
These observations are not used in isolation, but as part of a broader evaluation of a person’s overall health patterns.
Supporting the Body’s Natural Balance
Naturopathic care focuses on helping the body regain balance through natural support and lifestyle strategies rather than simply masking symptoms.
This may include areas such as:
- Nutritional support
- Metabolic balance
- Hormonal health
- Sleep regulation
- Stress and nervous system balance
- Digestive support
- Lifestyle and environmental factors
The goal is to create conditions where the body can function more efficiently and maintain better long-term health.
A Different Perspective on Health
Many people today feel frustrated because they are managing symptoms without understanding the underlying cause.
Naturopathic medicine offers a different perspective by examining the patterns behind symptoms, helping patients understand what their body may be signaling.
This approach allows individuals to take a more informed role in supporting their own health.
