What You Need to Know
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection you can catch from the bite of an infected black-legged tick (often called a deer tick). It’s sneaky—most people don’t even feel the bite, but it can lead to big problems if left untreated. Named after Lyme, Connecticut, where it was first identified in the 1970s, it’s now common in wooded areas, especially in the U.S., Europe, and parts of Asia. It’s caused by Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, and early action is key to beating it.
How Lyme Disease Affects the Body
Lyme starts small but can spread if the tick isn’t caught in time. Here’s what happens:
- Early Signs: A bull’s-eye rash (red ring around the bite) shows up in about 70-80% of cases, usually within 3-30 days. You might also feel flu-like—fever, chills, body aches, fatigue, or a headache.
- If Untreated: It can hit the joints, heart, or nervous system. Joint pain (like in the knees), heart palpitations, or nerve issues (numbness, memory fog) can crop up weeks or months later. Some call it “the great imitator” because symptoms mimic other diseases.
The bacteria mess with your immune system, triggering inflammation. Your body’s response can linger even after treatment, causing chronic symptoms like fatigue or joint pain, known as Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS) in some cases.
The Body in Lyme Disease
Lyme hits multiple systems:
- Immune System: The bacteria spark a big immune reaction, leading to inflammation that can stick around.
- Nervous System: It can inflame nerves or the brain, causing memory issues or facial paralysis (Bell’s palsy).
- Joints: Inflammation attacks joints, causing swelling and pain.
Heart: Rare but serious—heart rhythm problems can occur.
