A note from Randi Shannon · Miami
I was quoted $1,400 a month.
I pay under $300.
Three years in, this is how I handle my own healthcare. I get asked about it more than anything else I do.

Three years ago my Blue Cross Blue Shield renewal came in at $1,400 a month. I am self-employed. I see a doctor about once a year. I was being asked for $16,800 a year for the privilege of saying I could. I did not pay it, and I still have not.
What I use instead is Impact Health Sharing, a not-for-profit community where members share one another’s eligible medical bills. It is not insurance, and it does not pretend to be. In my case it runs under $300 a month. I see any doctor I choose, and in three years I have not once had to ask a receptionist, “do you take this?”
The arithmetic, in my case
Rounded, and based on the plan I was quoted. Your household, your state and the responsibility level you choose will change the figure.
What membership includes, at no extra cost
- 01Any doctor. There is no network. You go where you want to go.
- 02Annual wellness visit and routine labs, shared at 100%.
- 03Unlimited virtual visits with a doctor, day or night.
- 04Three short-term teletherapy sessions. Nobody expects that one.
- 05$0 generic prescriptions, and savings on the rest.
- 06Dental and vision discounts.
- 07A concierge who coordinates paying the bill. No 1-800 number.
- 08Wellness rewards up to $150 a month toward your responsibility amount.
How the sharing works
You choose an annual household responsibility amount from four levels. Four, not a forty-page plan comparison. Once it is met, eligible bills are shared at 90%, and your 10% is capped at $5,000 per household per year. I can read that sentence aloud in one breath. Try that with a deductible page.
Impact says it has never issued a universal price increase in over five years. My old plan went up every January like a clock.
The question “do you take this?” is simply gone from my life. That alone was worth the switch.
If you are 65 or over
There is a separate Seniors program that works alongside Medicare Parts A and B after a $1,000 annual responsibility amount, with no network and no pre-existing condition limitation on that program. Medicare’s gaps are where retirees get hurt. This is built for those gaps.
Read this part before you decide
Impact is rooted in Christian values and is open to anyone, regardless of religion or creed, who agrees to its shared beliefs and guidelines. Read the guidelines. I did. There are monthly assessments for tobacco use and for BMI, and sharing follows published rules rather than a government mandate, so it is not the right fit for everyone. If you have an open claim or an ongoing condition, read how pre-existing conditions are handled before you move anything. Do not cancel any insurance, or stop any medication, on the strength of a web page. Get your own quote, read your own numbers, and decide for yourself.
Open enrollment 2027: shop this alongside the Marketplace
ACA open enrollment for 2027 coverage runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027, and Marketplace insurers have asked for a median increase of about 15% on top of this year’s jump. If you buy your own health insurance and your renewal letter is sitting on the counter, use the same evening to get a health sharing quote. It takes about two minutes, there is no commitment, and you will have two real numbers to compare instead of one.
Questions people ask me about this
Is health sharing an alternative to ACA open enrollment?
It is the alternative I chose. A medical cost-sharing community is not health insurance and is not sold on the Marketplace, but it is a long-standing way to handle medical bills. ACA open enrollment for 2027 runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Health sharing enrollment is open all year, so you can compare the two side by side on your own schedule.
Can I join a health sharing community outside open enrollment?
Yes. Impact Health Sharing accepts new members year-round. There is no November deadline and no qualifying life event required. If your renewal letter arrives in October and the number is unaffordable, you do not have to wait.
How much does Impact Health Sharing cost per month?
In my case, under $300 a month for one adult, after being quoted $1,400 a month by Blue Cross Blue Shield. Your monthly share depends on your household size, your age, your state and the annual household responsibility amount you choose from four levels. Get your own quote; the numbers on this page are mine, not a promise of yours.
Is Impact Health Sharing insurance?
No. It is a not-for-profit medical cost-sharing community where members share one another’s eligible medical bills according to published guidelines. It is not insurance, it is not regulated as insurance, and sharing is not guaranteed by a contract the way an insurance claim is. Read the guidelines before you decide.
Does health sharing work with Medicare?
There is a separate Seniors program for members 65 and over that works alongside Medicare Parts A and B after a $1,000 annual responsibility amount, with no network and no pre-existing condition limitation on that program. It is built for the gaps Medicare leaves.
Can I keep my own doctor with health sharing?
Yes. There is no network. You see any doctor or hospital you choose. In three years I have not once had to ask a receptionist whether they take my plan.
What is the catch with health sharing?
It is not for everyone. Impact is rooted in Christian values and open to anyone who agrees to its shared beliefs and guidelines. There are monthly assessments for tobacco use and for BMI, pre-existing conditions are shared under published rules rather than immediately, and sharing follows guidelines rather than a government mandate. If you have an open claim or an ongoing condition, read how pre-existing conditions are handled before you move anything.
Enrollment is open all year, so there is no window to miss. But if you are shopping anyway this season, shop this too.
And once you are set up, email me. I will give you a complimentary 10-minute conversation about keeping yourself healthier, no reading, no pitch, just a talk. That is my gift to you, not part of the program.
