Stage 3 is a turning point — in the direction you choose
If you’ve been told you have stage 3 kidney disease (an eGFR between 30 and 59), you’re at one of the most important crossroads in this entire journey. Stage 3 means moderate loss of kidney function — but it’s also the stage where what you do next carries enormous weight. This is where the right whole-body care has the most room to help you protect what you have, and where I have watched the most people change direction.
It’s also where generic advice gets dangerous, because what’s right for one person at stage 3 can harm another. This is the moment to have a naturopathic expert who understands kidneys guiding you — not a search bar.
As Traditional Naturopathic Doctor Randi Shannon, I help people at stage 3 understand exactly what they’re facing, calm the fear, and build a safe, personalized plan to support their kidneys from the root — the way the body was designed to heal.
What “stage 3” actually means
Kidney disease is staged by eGFR — a number calculated from your blood creatinine, age, and sex that estimates how much filtering your kidneys are doing. A healthy adult sits above 90. Stage 3 is split in two:
- Stage 3a — eGFR 45 to 59. Most people here feel completely normal.
- Stage 3b — eGFR 30 to 44. This is where fatigue, swelling, and changes in blood pressure or energy start to show up for some people.
Here is what the number does not tell you: why. Two people with the same eGFR can be on completely different paths depending on what is actually driving the strain — blood sugar, blood pressure, inflammation, mineral depletion, toxic load, dehydration, medications, stress, or a gut that isn’t doing its job. The number is a snapshot. The cause is the story. And the cause is where the hope lives.
One thing I want you to hear clearly: a stage 3 diagnosis is not a countdown, and “watch and wait” is not a plan. It is an invitation to finally pay attention to the whole body — and the body responds when you do.
Why stage 3 is the best window for whole-body healing
At stages 1 and 2, most people are never told anything is wrong. By stage 4, the conversation has turned toward dialysis and transplant, and the room to maneuver is smaller. Stage 3 is the middle — enough function left to protect, enough warning to act, and enough time for root-cause work to do what it does.
The things that push kidney disease forward are rarely inside the kidney itself. They’re upstream: blood sugar and blood pressure, chronic inflammation, mineral deficiency, a sluggish liver and gut, dehydration, and a diet that was never built for a body under strain. Those are exactly the things traditional naturopathy has addressed for thousands of years — and exactly the things that get skipped in a fifteen-minute appointment.
I don’t make claims, and I don’t need to. I’ve spent more than 25 years watching what happens when people at this stage stop managing a number and start healing a body. That is why I do this work.
What we work on together at stage 3
Every plan is personal, because every body is different. But these are the areas that come up for nearly everyone I work with at this stage:
1. Reading what your body is already telling you
My signature face, tongue & fingernail analysis is a 5,000-year-old observational art. The tongue, the skin under the eyes, the nail beds, and the face show me where the body is under strain and what it is asking for — often long before a lab result changes. This is where every plan begins, because it tells me what your body needs, not what a protocol says.
2. Getting blood sugar and blood pressure truly steady
These two are behind most kidney strain in this country. If either is part of your story, steadying them naturally — through food, minerals, movement, sleep, and stress — is the single most protective thing you can do for your filters, and it is very much within reach.
3. Eating for your kidneys — not a generic list
“Kidney diet” advice online is all over the map, and some of it is dangerous. What your kidneys need depends on your stage and your picture, not a blog. We also look at what you’re eating that quietly adds inflammatory load. My sabotage vs. support food swap chart is a safe place to begin.
4. Ancient remedies, minerals, and herbs — chosen for you
Traditional naturopathy has a deep toolbox for the kidneys: herbs, minerals, hydration practices, and food-as-medicine traditions that long predate the modern clinic. The art is in choosing what fits your body and your stage, and — just as important — removing what is working against you. A lot of what’s sold as “kidney support” online can do real harm at stage 3; I wrote more about that in how to lower creatinine naturally: what helps, what’s hype.
5. Hydration, sleep, the liver, and the gut
The kidneys don’t work alone. A congested liver, a leaky or sluggish gut, chronic low-grade dehydration, and poor sleep all land on the kidneys. These are unglamorous, and they matter more than most people expect.
Honest hope
I will never promise you a specific lab result — no honest practitioner can, because every body is different. What I can promise is this: the body was designed to heal, kidney strain has causes, and causes can be addressed. You will leave understanding your own body far better than you do right now, with a plan built around you, and with more hope than you walked in with. Your medical team keeps monitoring your kidneys; I help the rest of you heal.
Frequently asked questions about stage 3 kidney disease
Can stage 3 kidney disease get better?
I don’t make claims, and I’d be wary of anyone who does — in either direction. What I can tell you is that kidney strain has root causes, that the body is designed to heal when those causes are addressed, and that I have spent 25 years watching people at stage 3 feel better, think clearer, and change the direction they were heading. The earlier you start, the more there is to work with.
What is the difference between stage 3a and 3b?
Stage 3a is an eGFR of 45–59; stage 3b is 30–44. The lower the number, the more strain the kidneys are under and the more likely you are to notice symptoms like fatigue, swelling, or changes in energy. Both are stage 3, and both are a window for action.
Should I see a naturopath for kidney disease?
A traditional naturopath looks at what the medical model doesn’t have time for: the root causes, the whole body, the food, the minerals, the lifestyle, and what your body is showing you. That work complements the monitoring your medical team provides. If anyone tells you there is nothing to be done but watch and wait, get a second opinion — from someone who looks at the whole you.
What foods should I avoid with stage 3 kidney disease?
It depends on your body, which is exactly why I won’t post a list. In general, most people at stage 3 do far better with less processed food, less added salt, less sugar, fewer chemicals, and real food that nourishes rather than burdens. We build meals you actually enjoy around what your body needs.
Do I need to be on dialysis at stage 3?
No. Dialysis is a stage 5 conversation (eGFR below 15). Stage 3 is about protecting and supporting the function you have so that conversation stays far away. If you ever do reach that point, I also provide support for people on dialysis.
How do virtual consultations work?
Everything is 100% virtual. You send high-resolution photos of your face, tongue, and fingernails; I study them closely, then we meet by video to go through your whole picture — history, diet, what you’re feeling, and what your body is showing. My clients are in all 50 U.S. states and 21+ countries.
You’re at the turning point. Choose the direction.
If you’re at stage 3, this is the moment. Not next year, not after the next set of labs. Book a consultation, or call the office at 786-833-7248. You can also start with the Kidney Health hub to see everything I offer at every stage, or read what stage 4 means if you want to understand the road ahead.
Individual results vary and no specific outcome is promised.
